Spiritual, Moral, Social, Cultural & Vocations

As Catholics we believe that human beings are created in the image of God, and that each shares in God’s purpose to bring life and allow creation to flourish, underpins the work and nature of the school, and is endorsed in our mission statement.

 

MISSION STATEMENT

'To educate each and every unique child in our care, to hear and respond to what God calls them to be'

At Saint John Wall we recognise that the personal development of our pupils, spiritually, Morally, Socially, culturally and vocations plays an important part in their ability to learn and achieve.

Saint John Wall aims to deliver SMSCV education through all aspects of School Life: Curriculum, House System, Extra Curricular activities, school trips, pastoral system, assemblies, masses and services as well as Cross Curricular Days.

Here is just a flavour of how this important dimension is celebrated in the life of the school:

 

Spiritual

 

  • On Cross Curricular Day Year 7 have explored healthy lifestyles.
  • Pupils have opportunities to reflect on learning experiences both in and out of lessons. For example, team talks following sports matches to reflect on how the game was played and agree the next steps; a reflective log in music lessons where pupils assess what they have done well and identify the next steps to make progress changed over time, an opportunity to listen back, make changes and re-record.
  • In Science lessons, pupils study various topics that contributes to their perspective on life.
  • RE and Lay Chaplain organise Masses and services for the pupils to experience and also participate.
  • Pupils are able to visit the Chapel and speak with the Lay Chaplain.
  • Pupils celebrate other religions such as Diwali.
  • During Arts week pupils created a contempary version of an 11th century San Damianio Cross.
  • Pupils in Year 10 and 11 have opportunities to be Faith Ambassadors, leading pupils in their spiritual development. 
  • All year groups can belong to the chaplaincy team: writing, arranging and taking part in all Collective Worship including Masses and Services. 
  • During British Values week pupils have the opportunity to explore different religions, including Judaism and events which have impacted the religious practices today. 

 

Moral

 

  • Looking at right and wrong: History pupils learning about the Suffragette movement.
  • In Year 10 Religious Studies lesson, pupils study the sensitive topic of euthanasia.
  • Pupils show an interest in and respect for other people's feelings and values. Within lessons, pupils investigate and offer reasoned views about moral and ethical issues. For example on Moodle pupils offer their thoughts on current issues such as ‘Is Marriage Still Important today?’
  • In History, pupils study the impact of how the Germans treated different sections of society.
  • Fund raising activities always have a high profile within the school. Pankhurst House selling cakes for Macmillan and the Summer Fete.
  • Loudmouth Theatre Company come in and work with pupils on Moral issues such as love, relationship and life changing decisions.
  • Assembly on the Holocaust – Keeping the memory alive.
  • In Food Technology pupils examine food packaging and how products are labelled.

 

Social

 

  • There is a willingness to participate in a variety of social settings. In Year 7 English, classes have the opportunity to learn in a variety of settings. Expectations for learning are carefully transferred from classroom to ICT suite, to Library.
  • The warm relationships enjoyed by pupils with their teachers is commented on by all visitors to the school.
  • Christmas Dinner for the elderly that live in the local Community are invited to attend and be part of the celebrations.
  • BBC News School Report: Pupils work together as a team to decide the story, communicate clearly to their audience and work to a deadline.
  • In Geography pupils investigate flooding and learn the social consequences of flooding.
  • House Competitions such as the Maths quiz, pupils working in teams to achieve house points with the support of their peers.
  • In science pupils study the reproduction – aspect of life and relationship.
  • During British Values week, pupils have the opportunity to visit local places of interest including Birmingham Art Gallery. 

 

Cultural

 

  • The cultural environment of the school is a warm and caring one created so that pupils may thrive.
  • Pupil successes are celebrated in as many ways as possible; posters around the school, achievement assemblies and celebration evenings all help to show pupils how they are valued as individuals. It is always heart-warming to see pupils celebrating the achievements of their peers.
  • Displays celebrate and value both academic and extra-curricular achievements throughout the school.
  • The PE Department encourage opportunities for girls in what may be perceived as typically male dominated sports for example Football.
  • Humanities trip to Spain.
  • Year 7 visit a local Gurdwara and go on regular trips to St Mary's Convent.
  • Year 7 take part in Community Week and experience various cultural activities such as dancing.
  • EAL Department work with a school in Poland and have visited Poland to experience school life there.
  • Pupils from each house learn and celebrate their patron – Nelson Mandela, John Paul, Emmeline Pankhurst, Martin Luther King and Mahatma Gandhi.

 

Vocations

 

  • All pupils look at who God is calling them to be in collective worship.
  • Year 7 and 8 have vocational days on cross curricular days within school.
  • Year 9 have a vocational day.
  • Year 8 options process focus on God's calling.
  • All departments allow opportunities for links to vocations within lessons.
  • Career advice and interviews focus on who God is calling them to be.
